Conrad Askland
had a strict musical upbringing in classical music as a boy soprano
in the Northwest Boys Choir and as a young opera singer in Carmen,
Tosca and Boris Gudonov with the Seattle Opera. As a boy soprano
he had the lead role in Menotti's opera Amahl And The Night Visitors
with the Seattle Opera company.
He also began
piano studies at a young age and had private tutoring in composition
at the Cornish Institue in Seattle and later at Pacific Lutheran
University, St. Olaf University, the University of Miami and UCLA
school of film scoring.
"Romantic
music for piano will always be my first love", says Askland.
"I love Bach for counterpoint and musical workmanship, but
nothing touches the piano works of Chopin, Brahms and other famous
Romantic composers for putting you in that place no other music
does". Then he smiles and says, "That is, until I began
composing better music..."
