Composer
John Williams Influence
"As
a child the music of composer John Williams was the closest thing
I could identify to as a modern composer. It was romantic, full,
powerful and best of all, it was actually listened to outside a
concert hall!", says music composer Conrad Askland.
"I have
two experiences relating to the music of John Williams. One was
when I interviewed with a film composer in Los Angeles many years
ago to be his apprentice. He told me my music sounded exactly like
John Williams, and that John Williams was out of style now in Hollywood.
I thought to myself: 'That's fine, someday it will come back. It's
what I like', said Conrad Askland.
"Another
experience was when the college music director told me my music
sounded exactly like John Williams and Andrew Lloyd Webber on different
pieces. I thought this was a compliment until the instructor literally
said: 'I HATE Williams and Webber'. I never listened to another
viewpoint from that instructor. I feel THAT strongly about the music
of John Williams, as millions of others do too", says Askland.
